PATHWAYS

People become coaches for a variety of reasons.

These reasons can include:

  • A future career
  • Love of the sport
  • To assist others to enjoy the sport
  • To give back to the sport after participating
  • The involvement of your children
  • They are only person willing to do it
  • To achieve success and recognition

Whatever the reason, the coaching role can be an immensely rewarding experience for you and the people you coach, if you remember:

  • That it is not about the coach, it is about the players and the game
  • It is a continuous learning experience
  • A positive attitude is contagious

The role of the coach is crucially important to the development of the game and the development of its players and the role is equally important regardless of the level at which you coach.

The coaching pathway can take you to the highest levels of the game but it is a pathway that will not be traversed entirely by most of us.

Regardless of how far we go along that path, and at whatever level we coach, remember that all players who represent their country were at some time coached perhaps by their mum or dad and certainly by a number of community and club coaches who will all have contributed to their development.

Basketball SA in conjunction with Basketball Australia and the Australian Sports Commission offers a number of Basketball Coaching Courses to help coaches improve their skills.
