INCLUSIVE BASKETBALL PROGRAM

For athletes with an intellectual disability or integration difficulty


The Inclusive Basketball Program (IBP) is a basketball competition that provides playing and training opportunities for players with an intellectual disability or integration difficulty.  In addition, the IBP provides opportunities for more experienced and skilled players to compete at local District level and at National Level at the Ivor Burge Championships.
 

WHO is the Inclusive Basketball Program for? 

  • Males and females
  • Open age (over 13 years old)
  • Beginners or more advanced / experienced players
  • People with an Intellectual or Physical Disability
  • People with Learning and Integration difficulties
  • People who have Special Needs
     

Obviously there is a wide range of abilities in our members. To ensure all members are constantly challenged and supported according to their different needs, they are placed in particular teams to provide a balanced competition, to promote personal basketball skills development, leadership skills and social skills .   

Three centres currently provide these opportunities: 

Pasadena Sports Centre:
Pasadena High School,
Corner Goodwood and Daws Road

Cost: $6.00 per game (plus a uniform cost of $15.00 which supplies the player with a reversible playing singlet).

Two divisions of competition are offered at this centre. Players are placed in the division that will enhance their personal development.

Division 1: Monday of each school term at 6:00pm

  • Consists mainly of experienced players, the majority being male participants
  • The rules in this division are no different to mainstream basketball
  • Competition is very fast and highly competitive

Division 2: Monday of each school term at 5.10pm

  • For beginners or younger players
  • Most of the females within the IBP play in this division
  • The rules are flexible depending on the individual's skill level
  • Still being competitive, this division provides lots of fun, friendship and enjoyment

Cost: $7.50 registration / $5.50 per game / $3.50 for trainings for teams with a bye

  • Basketball tuition delivered by experienced coaches in an encouraging and supportive environment
  • Athletic, physical and skill developmentthrough regular matches
  • Talent Identification by coaches involved in South Australian State Team for people with an Intellectual Disability
  • Opportunities to participate in the State Development Squad and at National Ivor Burge Championships (dependent on skill level)
  • Opportunities to become involved as a scorer, referee, assistant coach or coach within the program
  • Opportunities for those with the requisite skill level to join Adelaide District Clubs.


WHO are the coaches?

The Inclusive Basketball Program coaching staff have a vast array of experience. All coaches have an extensive background in basketball or working with people with special needs.  Included in the coaching staff are:                           

  • Basketball SA Development staff
  • South Australian State Ivor Burge Coach
  • Parents and current IBP players

HOW do I become an IBP member?

Any player interested in becoming a member of the Inclusive Basketball Program must initially attend on a Monday night as a spectator and register their interest with the Program Coordinator.  When numbers permit, new players will be placed in a team and join the State League competition and regularly participate in matches each week.
