Yesterday, August 13, the Premier League competition gathered at the Morphettville Racecourse to celebrate the 2017 Premier League season that was.

The fantastic achievements of players, coaches and officials of the 2017 Premier League season were celebrated yesterday when the league came together for the annual Halls Woollacott Awards. 

Held at the Morphetville Racecourse, and hosted by one of SA's greatest basketball legends, Brett Maher, the Awards luncheon welcomed those who support the Premier League competition for a day of food, drink, and entertainment. 

The event boasts a proud history dating back to the 1960's, and Basketball SA were proud to host yet another successful event this year. 

The awards are calculated upon the conclusion of the minor rounds of the Premier League competition and are based on a voting system, of which more details can be found here. 


This 2017 season saw the following high achievers presented with awards: 

Phil Yuill Referee Award (Women's Competition) - Adam Gillings

Phil Yuill Referee Award (Men's Competition) - Nathan Durant

The Referee of the Year is awarded based on 3-2-1 votes by coaches at the end of the minor rounds.

Coach of the Year Award (Women's Competition) - Nathon Jones (Eastern Mavericks) 

Coach of the Year Award (Men's Competition) - Paul Rigoni (Sturt Sabres) 

The “Coach of the Year” is awarded based on 3-2-1 votes by fellow coaches at the end of the minor rounds.

Women's All Star Five

Point Guard: Ashley Claussen (Woodville Warriors) 
Off Guard: Alex Wilson (Eastern Mavericks) 
Small Forward: Jessica Good (Norwood Flames)
Power Forward: Olivia Thompson (Forestville Eagles)
Centre: Tayla Corrigan (North Adelaide Rockets)

Men's All Star Five

Point Guard: Eian Davis (South Adelaide Panthers) 
Off Guard: Darrius Oldham (West Adelaide Bearcats) 
Small Forward: Anthony Drmic (Southern Tigers) 
Power Forward: Michael Nwelue (Southern Tigers) 
Centre: Majok Deng (Forestville Eagles) 

The All Star Five Awards are awarded to the best five players from the season who are determined by a system in which each team’s coach, captain and club delegate allocates 3-2-1 votes to five players after the completion of the minor rounds.

Women's Best Defensive Player - Jessica Good (Norwood Flames) 

Men's Best Defensive Player - Alex Starling (North Adelaide Rockets) 

The Best Defensive Player Awards are determined by a system in which each team’s head coach allocates 3-2-1 votes to players after the completion of the minor rounds.

Women's MVP - Alex Wilson (Eastern Mavericks) 

Men's MVP - Darrius Oldham (West Adelaide Bearcats) 

The Most Valuable Player Awards for the Premier League are determined by a system in which each team’s head coach allocates votes after each minor game of the season. After the completion of the minor rounds a list of the top 15 vote recipients is compiled, based on this voting system and sent to each team’s head coach who then allocates 3-2-1 votes to players for this award from that list.

Merv Harris Medal - Sarah Elsworthy (Sturt Sabres) 

Frank Angove Medal - Jacob Rigoni (Sturt Sabres)

The Merv Harris and Frank Angove medals are presented to the Premier League player aged Under 21 years on December 31 of the year in which the competition is played, who polls the highest number of votes towards the Halls or Woollacott medal.

Halls Medallist - Alex Wilson (Eastern Mavericks) 

The Halls medal is presented to the player deemed to be the “Fairest and Most Brilliant”. The winners are determined by a system in which referees allocate 3-2-1 votes to players after each game. 

Woollacott Medallist - Eian Davis (South Adelaide Panthers) 

The Woollacott Medal is presented to the player deemed to be the “Fairest and Most Brilliant”. The winners are determined by a system in which referees allocate 3-2-1 votes to players after each game.
