Danny O’Brien Announces Retirement, New Development Manager Appointment & New Communications & Marketing Officer.
After 14 years of service with Basketball SA, Danny O’Brien has announced his retirement.
Danny was appointed to a new role of Aussie Hoops Coordinator for BASA when the initial national introductory basketball program was developed and gradually his role transitioned to become the Basketball SA Development Manager incorporating a range of tasks assisting community basketball development.
Danny has been a highly valued member of the Basketball SA team and respected widely across sport. He has created strong connections for basketball with the Office for Recreation and Sport, School Sport Associations, Councils, Inclusive Sport, and driven Aussie Hoops, Sporting Schools, school clinic programs, coach accreditation, member protection, and specific projects for a number of years. Danny also successfully managed the basketball component of the Masters Games and Pacific Schools Games.
The connections and links into the sporting community that Danny has developed have been valued and we will be very sad to see him leave.
On the flip side, we couldn’t be more delighted for Danny who will be able to spend more time with family and friends, and I’m sure he and wife Linda are looking forward to many new travel adventures.
Danny’s last day will be Friday, 28 October 2016.
Fortunately for Basketball SA Danny O’Brien provided advanced notice of his intention to retire and we have used this as an opportunity to review the role. We have decided to restructure the role (although still titled Development Manager) to have a much greater focus on member support. We see this is an exciting change where Basketball SA can work more with our members to help them achieve growth and success.
As such we are making an internal change to our staff and appointing Karlin Fernandini (nee Haug) as the new Development Manager. Karlin will come into this role with a great understanding and passion for community sport development, with a background as a Sport and Recreation Officer (Ipswich City Council), Morphett Vale Recreation Stadium Manager, and volunteer committee roles for various sports. Karlin is also currently finalising a Masters of Business (HR) degree and has recently completed a Women’s Leadership program through the Office for Recreation and Sport.
Karlin has a great passion for working with and supporting clubs and is excited at the new direction and focus under this role.
Karlin will transition into the Development Manager role from 3 October, and Basketball SA will be advertising for a new Stadium Manager for Morphett Vale Recreation Centre in the coming days.
Basketball SA has appointed Chelsea Bowring as the new Communications and Marketing Officer.
Chelsea has been working as an Intern with Sally Leverenz in the Communications and Marketing area for the past three-months after completing a degree in Business, majoring in Advanced Leadership & Marketing. Chelsea has been assisting with BSA’s social media, the new website development and the Halls Woollacott Awards and Premier League grand final and has developed a good understanding of our sport and business. Chelsea will continue to build on BSA’s communication platforms and strategies, while bringing in a strong understanding of our sports marketing needs.
Chelsea will commence in the role on Monday, 12 September 2016.
