Your U18 SA Metro Women will bring home the silver for our state after a fantastic effort at the Australian Championships last week.

The 2017 U18 Australian Championships were held in Townsville from April 8 to April 15. South Australia had four teams representing our state throughout the Championship with a Men's and Women's team for both SA Metro and SA Country participating.

All four SA teams had a big week ahead of them meeting the strongest under 18 squads across the country. The SA Metro Women lead by Head Coach John Turnbull, managed to win all five of their minor round matches securing their top of the ladder finish in their pool heading in to finals. Continuing with their impressive performance, the Women secured themselves a spot in Saturday's gold medal match against Victoria Country. The girls fought hard all game and kept all of us back home on the edge of our seats. The final score read 59-60 with your SA Metro Women bringing home the Silver for our state.

The SA Metro Men battled hard all week against what was a very tough draw and a relatively new team. The boys finished 10th for the Championship after going down to ACT 79-72 in what was a great come-back match.

The SA Country Women showed significant progress throughout the Championship and worked cohesively as a team to secure 6th position for the Championship after taking a hit by the strong QLD South team with a final score of 43-78.

The SA Country Men also faced a number of very strong teams throughout the Championship and had a tough fight ahead of them. The boys finished the tournament on a high note with a 95-78 win over Northern Territory on the Friday, securing their 11th place.

In addition to our four teams, we also had four referees represent SA in Townsville. Congratulations to Ben Shepherd, James Brown, Hugh Starkey, and Nathan Davis on their fantastic effort throughout the Championships.

Basketball SA would like to congratulate all four teams on their outstanding efforts, and also thank the coaches, officials, support staff, spectators, families, friends, and Basketball Australia for a fantastic Championship event of which we are sure was enjoyed by all.
