Over the past week, four South Australian teams travelled to Stirling, Western Australia, to compete in the annual U16 Helloworld Travel Australian Championships.

The eight-day tournament began July 8 and wrapped up Saturday July 15.

The Championship welcomed teams from all over the country to compete for the U16 National title. SA were proud to be represented by both a boys and girls team from SA Metro and SA Country.

In what was a long and tough week for our athletes, some fantastic basketball development was shown throughout.

Your SA Country Boys team finished in 10th place after going down to Tasmania in their final match of the Championships. Your SA Country Girls were also unable to secure a win to end their campaign, but not for a lack of trying with a final score reading 46-43 in the favour of the ACT outfit. The girls finished the tournament in 12th place.

Your SA Metro teams progressed through the minor rounds showing great promise but faced some strong opposition sides. Your SA Metro Boys finished in style beating the NSW Metro side by 10 points in the fight for 5th place. Your SA Metro Girls secured many impressive wins throughout the week which saw them step on the court in the Bronze Medal match against NSW Metro. The girls showed persistence and strength as they made a great comeback then traded baskets with the opposition for the remainder of the game. The scores were all but even until the final seconds when NSW Metro broke through to win the game 52-50.

Basketball Officials SA also sent four referees to represent our state at the Championships. Congratulations to Clayton Wells, Maddison Shaw, Lucinda Howell, and Damian Rault on their fantastic efforts throughout the week.

Basketball SA would like to congratulate all four teams on their hard work and determination displayed both on and off the court, and also thank the coaches, officials, support staff, spectators, families, friends, and Basketball Australia for yet another great Championship event.
